3/8: Short Places 5th In Atlantic City
With his 5th place performance in this weekend's NJSIAA Tournament at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, Matawan junior Johnny Short became the first Huskie to win a state tournament medal since Justin Haskins in 1997. Short won his opening two bouts of the tournament to become the first Matawan wrestler to ever advance to the State semis. Short was defeated in the semi by eventual runner-up Eric Dunnet of Eastern. After dropping his first wrestleback bout, Short defeated St. Augustine's AJ Fisher for the second time in the tournament to claim the 5th place medal.
For the season, Short finished up with a record of 36-5. Short won championships at the Region 6 Tournament, as well as the East Brunswick Tournament and the Matawan Icebreaker. In addition to his state medal, Short also won a 3rd place medal at the District 21 tournament. His 36 wins on the season ties the school record that he set in 2008. He will enter the 2009-2010 season with 98 career wins and is on pace to break the all-time school record.
Senior Cesare Antista fell just one win shy of a medal in his run down in Atlantic City. Wrestling at 135 pounds, Antista cruised to a pair of wins to open the tournament, including a 9-3 win over Region 5 champ Adam Mongelli of South River in the pre-quarterfinals. In the quarters, Antista was defeated by eventual runner-up Kodie Silvestri of Wallkill Valley. In his first wrestleback bout, Antista dropped a tough 6-4 overtime decision to JFK-Iselin's Tom Hogan.
The loss brings an end to one of the most successful careers in Matawan Wrestling history. Antista leaves the team as the all-time leader in victories with 122. He was a three-time District medal winner (champion in 2009), a two-time East Brunswick Tournament champion (Four-time medal winner), and a three-time Icebreaker medal winner (champion in 2009). Antista will continue his wrestling career next year at Williams College.

2/28: Short Becomes 1st Matawan Region Champ Since 97, Antista Advances
With his 6-3 win over Long Branch's Scott Festejo, Johnny Short became the first Matawan Huskie wrestler to win a Region 6 title since Justin Haskins in 1997. Short, who recorded a defensive pin over top-seeded BJ Young in the semifinals, now moves on to the NJSIAA State Championships in Atlantic City.
Short will be joined on Boardwalk Hall by teammate Cesare Antista who won three matches in a row on Saturday to take 3rd place at 135.
2/27: Short Advances To Region Semis
Johnny Short pinned Raritan's Chris VanFechtman in 1:54 to put himself into the semifinals of the Region 6 Tournament. Short, the 4th-seed, will face top-seeded BJ Young of Jackson Memorial in tomorrow's semifinal matchup.
Cesare Antista, Jordan Long, and Chris Howley were all defeated in their quarterfinal matchups, but will be in action in tomorrow morning's single elimination wrestleback round needing three wins to punch their tickets to AC.

2/21: Antista Wins Title, 5 Advance, Huskies Finish 3rd at Districts
With his 1st period pin of Howell's Mike Shaughnessy in the 135-pound weight class final, senior Cesare Antista became the first District champion for the Matawan Huskies since Tom Dounelis in 2002. With the win, Antista, who was dominant in his run to the title with two pins and a tech fall, receives a bye into Friday night's quarterfinal round of the Region 6 Wrestling Tournament at the Ritacco Center.
Four other Huskies placed 3rd at Districts to move on to the Region Tournament and will be on the mat for Tuesday night's opening round. The five medal winners enabled the Huskies to finish in the top 3 of the team standings at the District behind only perennial powers Howell and Jackson Memorial.

12/30: Huskies Finish 2nd at East Brunswick
Johnny Short and Cesare Antista won individual titles, and eight Huskies in all placed in the Top 6, as Matawan placed 2nd as a team despite entering only 12 wrestlers at the 2008 Bear Invitational at East Brunswick.
Cesare Antista rolled to the 135-pound title with three pins followed by a 4-0 win over South River's Adam Mongelli (the District 20 champion and Region 5 runner-up in 2008) in the finals. For Antista, it was career win number 97 which gives him the all-time school record at Matawan. For his performance, Antista was named as the tournaments Most Outstanding Wrestler. Congratulations to Cesare!
Short also won by fall in his opening three bouts, including a 40 second fall over Spotwood's Matt Salge in the semifinals, on his way to the 130-pound championship bout. In the finals, Short was dominant on the mat in a 17-4 win over Bishop Ahr's Mike Pysniak as he claimed the 130-pound crown.
Short and Antista are now each 7-0 on the season with titles from both the Matawan Icebreaker and Bear Invitational.
Jordan Long gave Bishop Ahr's Joe McAuley a run in the finals. Trailing 3-2 with 5 seconds left, Long tried a desperation takedown, but came up short and dropped a 5-2 decision to McAuley. McAuley is a returning District 19 champion and a state qualifer in 2008 after placing 2nd in the Region 5 Tournament.
Senior Chris Howley continues to look strong in his return from an injury that forced him to miss all of 2007. Howley, seeded 10th, knocked off the #2 seed Giovannia Balena of Montgomery in his opening bout and then turned Red Bank's Mike Damien in the ultimate tiebreaker to win their semifinal bout 6-3. In the final, Howley fell to Governor Livingston's Matt Tansey, a 3rd place finisher in District 12 in 2008.

12/20: Matawan Finishes 2nd At Icebreaker
Johnny Short (130), Cesare Antista (135), and Jordan Long (145) won individual titles and the Huskies had ten wrestlers in all finish in the Top 6, as Matawan finished 2nd as a team at the 2008 Matawan Icebreaker.
Short (lowerweight) and Long (upperweight) both claimed Most Outstanding Wrestler Awards.
Short, a junior, was dominant in his run to the 130-pound crown, picking up a 1st period pin the quarterfinals, a technical fall in the semis, and then a 13-3 major decision over Freehold Townships Anthony DePierro in the finals. The Icebreaker championship was the first for Short after placing third as a freshman and 2nd as a sophomore.
Long, picked up the most impressive win of the tournament. Following an opening round pin and a quaterfinal decision, Long defeated 2008 Region 5 Champion and State Place Winner Colin Hewitt of Franklin Township in the tiebreaker round to advance to the finals. The junior wasted little time claiming the championship in the finals, pressing 3rd-seeded Old Bridge's Jamie Bond in just 1:25.
Antista was equally impressive in his run to the 135-pound championship. The senior scored a tech in the quarters, a fall in the semis, and a major over Shore's Luke Bush in the finals.
