3/6: Season Ends For Short & Long In Atlantic City
Johnny Short's bid to become the first 2-time State medal winner in school history came up short at this weekend's NJSIAA State Tournament in Atlantic City. After defeating St. Peter's Alex Richardson in the pre-quarterfinals, Short dropped a narrow decision to Bergen Catholic's Connor Melde, 3-1, and was then eliminated from the tournament on Saturday morning with a loss to Andrew Polidore of Queen of Peace, leaving him one victory shy of a 2nd consecutive trip to the Boardwalk Hall podium.
Teammate Jordan Long was eliminated from the tourney at Friday night's single elimination round by Rahway's Diego Chavez.
The losses bring an end to the careers of two Huskies who helped transform the program into a Top 10 team in the Shore.
Short ends his career as the all-time program wins leader with 131 career wins. He earned a 5th place medal at States as a junior, was a 3-time Region medal winner and a 2-time champion, was a 3-time District medal winner and a 1-time champion, and a 2-time champion at the Matawan Icebreaker and East Brunswick Tournament.
Long compiled 101 wins over the course of his career putting him 3rd on the all-times list for Matawan. He earned a Region medal in 2010 and was also a 2-time District medalist, a 2-time Matawan Icebreaker champion, and a champion at this year's East Brunswick Tournament.
2/27: Short Wins 2nd Region Title; Long Finishes 2nd
Senior Johnny Short became the first wrestler in Matawan history to win two Region titles on Saturday when he majored Southern Regional's Bubba Lanno, 8-0, in the 125-pound championship bout. With the title, Short now receives a bye into the pre-quarterfinal round of the NJSIAA Championships in Atlantic City beginning this Friday night.
Joining Short on Boardwalk Hall will be fellow senior Jordan Long who finished in 2nd place at 145-pounds.

2/23: Long & Carillo Advance to Region Quarters
Seniors Jordan Long and Chris Carillo were victorious on Tuesday night in the opening round of the 2010 Region 6 Tournament at the Ritacco Center.
For Long, it was career victory #100, making him just the 3rd Matawan wrestler to hit the century mark. He and Carillo will now join teammate Johnny Short as they move on to Friday night's Region quarterfinals.
Fellow senior Charlie Cook had his season and career ended on Friday night with a 10-0 loss to TR North's Mike Barone. Cook finishes his season with a record of 21-10 and ends his career with 59 career wins.

Senior Johnny Short won his first District Championship and fellow seniors Chris Carillo, Jordan Long, and Charlie Cook all won medals as Matawan finished in 3rd place at this year's District 21 Tournament.
Short, the returning Region 6 champion at 125, receives a bye into Friday night's quarterfinal round of the Region Tournament, while Carillo, Cook, and Long will all be on the mat on Tuesday night for the opening round at the Ritacco Center in Toms River.

2010 Season Preview
For those that have just gotten interested in wrestling in the Shore Conference over the last four or five years, seeing the Matawan Huskies field competitive teams with full lineups and depth is the norm. For those that have been around a while, it's amazing to see how far coaches Andy Lasko and Joe DiMario have brought this program.
The days of the Huskies sending out seven or eight for varsity duals are LONG gone! With ten wrestlers in this year's lineup that won 16 or matches a year ago, and 60, count 'em 60!, wrestlers in the room, the Huskies are talented, deep, and looking to continue their climb up the ranks in the Shore Conference.
The lower half of the lineup will be anchored by returning Region 6 Champion, and State Medal Winner, senior Johnny Short who will most likely bounce around from 125-135 all season long to give the Huskies favorable matchups. He'll be joined by juniors Pat O'Donnell, Tommy Dillon, and Zeke Vega who should all break tthe 20+ win barrier this season after combining for 50 wins in 2009. Senior transfer Nick Proto (24-9 at St. John Vianney in '09) adds to what will be a very strong group group in the middle.
Seniors Jordan Long, Chris Carillo, Charlie Cook, and junior MacArthur Underwood make up a solid stretch run from 145-171, while junior Andre Hodge, who is said to be looking very good in the room early on, will man the 215 spot. The Huskies will have several options at 189 including freshman Glen Cross who went unbeaten last season in middle school.

Short, who enters the season two wins shy of 100 and 25 wins away from breaking the school record, had a breakout year in 2009. After taking 3rd at Districts, he went on a roll at the Ritacco and became the fifth Region champion in school history. The roll continued in Atlantic City where he wrestled his way to a 5th place finish, matching an all-time high at Matawan. In 2010 he'll be looking to retain his Region crown and aiming for a higher spot on the Boardwalk Hall podium.
DESPO's Outlook
Despite the losses of Ces Antista, Rob Rivera, Chris Howley, and their 79 wins to graduation, the Huskies are as deep and as talented as they've ever been. This is a very talented team with a lot of depth that will give opposing coaches a lot of matchup problems, especially in the middle. The big circle marks on the schedule have to be the back to back Saturday dates on January 16th and 23rd where the Huskies get Raritan and St. John Vianney. It will be those dates where they will take their shot at earning the first divisional title in the program's history. The talent is certainly here to pull it off...
