2010-2011 Season Preview

To say new head coach Jess Monzo has a tough act to follow would be a huge understatement. For the better part of the 90's and early 2000's, the Matawan Huskie wrestling program often had trouble filling full lineups. Fast forward to 2010 and the Huskies finished in the Top 10 in the Shore Conference and claimed their first ever Division Championship. For Monzo, while his squad graduated a ton of talent in 2010, he does get a pretty strong amount of returners, and he also has former head coach Andy Lasko on board as an assistant. So just because some of the bigger names are gone, doesn't mean the Huskies are necessarily ready to disappear.
Down Low (103-140): A nice mix of experience and youth down low. Patrick O'Donnell, Timmy Birch, Tommy Dillon and Hakan Yuksel are all double digit winners who showed great improvement from 2009 into 2010. If that trend continues this year and they could be in the 25-30 win range. Senior Zeke Vega is also back in the lower half and is the team's returning wins leader with 23. If the newcomers step up, this could be a very strong bunch.
Up Top (145-Hwt): With the departures of Jordan Long, Chris Carillo, Charlie Cook, and Jimmie Alvarez, who had 92 wins between the four of them, the Huskies will have some work to do in breaking a lot of new faces in the upperweights. However, they do have senior Andre Hodge and sophomore Glen Cross back. Those two should pack a nice 1-2 punch in the uppers for Matawan.
Wrestler To Watch - (So) Glenn Cross
Cross has an outstanding 2009-2010 season by putting up 17 wins in a weight class normally dominated by upperclassmen. With a year of experience to his credit, and a ton of potential, Cross could have a VERY big year in 2011.
