2020 Season Preview

Head Coach: Mike Mason (1st Season)

2019 Current Record:  11-14  /  Shore Conference:  11-11  /  B-North:  2-4
Sectionals: Did Not Qualify
5th Place District 19
5th Place B-North
23rd Place Shore Conference Tournament

Down Low (106-132): A strength here for certain as the Huskies return four starters and have some promising newcomers joining the ranks. Kamrin O'Neill has won 57 matches through his first two seasons. He was a District Champion last year, and was one round away from making the trip to Atlantic City. The Rubins, David and Lee, were both 2nd place finishers at the Districts, with David hitting the 30-win mark, while Lee finished at 27. Also back is Damiano Rotolo, a freshman starter last year, who will be looking to take the next step with the year's experience under his belt. There are promising freshmen in the mix here too. Keep an eye on Ricky Gomez, a multi-time State Qualifier at the intermediate level.

In The Middle (138-160): Three more starters return in the middle portion of the lineup. Junior Adam Coleman and senior Thomas Arendt, each are coming back off 18-win seasons, while David Quinlan is coming off a strong freshman run that saw him record 17 victories. There are a few new, young faces that will be looking to break into the lineup here as well, so Quinlan, Coleman, and Arendt provide a nice base to break them in around.

Up Top (170-Hwt): The numbers were thin up here a season ago, but the Huskies will have a pair of starters back in junior Ryan Calo, and sophomore Ahmed Hassan. Sophomore Jose Pereira and junior Elias Kouri did get a little experience last season, and will be looking to step up this year, while juniors Brandon McCormack and Nick Glende join the mix after successful seasons on the gridiron.

The numbers are as high as they've been at Matawan in a decade, when they were Top 10 contenders in the Shore. There is a ton of enthusiasm in the program right now. This is going to be a very young team, with just a couple seniors, but there is a healthy amount of good, young talent that has this team headed upwards. They really have the potential to have a great stretch in the lowerweights, and if the newcomers up top step up, this team is going to rack up the wins. The schedule is solid with the B-North teams like Middletown North, Colts Neck, Ocean, and Wall, and there are some tough out of division meets lined up as well, that should have this team tested and ready for a nice post-season run for several individuals. They also look to qualify for the Sectionals and try and make some noise there as well. A definite program on the rise.
