2021 Matawan Wrestling
The solid freshman class from 2018 now enters their senior season, and are looking towards big things in 2021.
The lower portion of the lineup has a good mix of proven veteran talent, and some promising newcomers. The senior brother tandem of David & Lee Rubin anchor the group down low. David, who will be wrestling for Washington & Lee next year, has 87 career wins, and is a returning State Qualifier. Lee, who has committed to wrestle at Rochester Institute of Technology next year, is a 2-time District Finalist. The brothers will be joined by Ricky Gomez, who won 24 matches a freshman in 2020, to give Matawan a strong core to break in some promising incoming frosh around.
There is potential to have a real strong run from 132-152. Kamrin O'Neil enters the season with 93 career victories. O'Neil, who will attend Ursinus next season, was a District Champion in 2019, and was two wins away from a medal in AC last season. Fellow senior Adam Coleman, a 30-match winner last season, was a District Champ last year and finished 6th in the Region. Junior Damiano Rotolo won 19 bouts for the Huskies in 2020. That trio is joined by newcomer Thomas Verdiglione, a senior transfer with 104 career wins who was a 2-time State runner-up while wrestling in Connecticut.
Up top, the Huskies will have a good amount of experience returning this year, led by senior Ryan Calo, a 4-year starter, and junior David Quinlan, who won 17 bouts last season.
There's a strong senior presence in this year's lineup. They have come a long way since breaking into the lineup in 2018, and are looking to have a big year as a team, and individually in 2021. It has been 11 years since the Huskies last won a Divisional Title, but they have the talent here to contend for the crown in a revamped B-North that saw the departures of Middletown North & Ocean Township, and the arrival of Freehold Boro.
